Krona Moonrise

Sun, Moon, planets and satellite passes as one ring, and whether you'll see them

Krona Moonrise on a phone and a Wear OS watch: the Sun and the Moon over the next 24 hours, here a total solar eclipse.
The ring

Krona Moonrise shows the next 24 hours of the sky as one ring: when the Sun and the Moon rise and set, where the planets stand, which satellites pass — and whether the clouds will let you see them.

The Sun's arc inside, the Moon's outside, each as thick as the body stands high. Satellite passes as bars on the outer band. The cloud along your line of sight shades the arcs: full color where the sky is open, dark and faint where cloud closes it. A violet glow inside the arcs shows how deep into the stars the night lets you see.

Watch app and watch face

Watch app with the same three pages; the crown steps through the passes. Watch face with the ring and the phase disc, installed from the app on Wear OS 6 and newer. Complications: sunrise / sunset, moonrise / moonset, sky event, satellite pass, moon phase and, with Premium Weather, weather warnings. Three tiles.

  • Sun & Moon ring: the Moon's phase, the next rise or set of the Sun and the Moon, the next passes
  • Satellite pass: the next pass and its path, with buttons to step through the passes
  • Sky compass: where the Sun, the Moon and the chosen planet stand

Runs on any watch with Wear OS 5.0 or newer, paired with a phone on Android 8 or newer. The FAQ lists the supported watches.

In detail

CLOUD ALONG THE LINE OF SIGHT

A weather model says how much of the sky is covered; Krona Moonrise follows the line from you to the body through each cloud layer and weighs how thick the cloud is. As fine as the best model where you are:

  • Central Europe (DWD ICON-D2, 2.1 km) and the contiguous United States (NOAA HRRR, 3 km), for two days
  • The rest of Europe (DWD ICON-EU, 6.5 km)
  • Everywhere else, the global model (DWD ICON, 13 km)

PLANETS, SHOWERS, AURORA, ECLIPSES

Put the Moon, a planet, a meteor shower in season, the aurora or the asteroid Apophis on the outer band; the aurora is listed when NOAA's Kp forecast brings it into sight where you are. Solar and lunar eclipses: the disc shows the covered Sun or the shadowed Moon, with the next contact time.

YOUR OWN SKY OBJECTS

Add a star, a galaxy, a nebula, a cluster, a dwarf planet like Pluto, an asteroid or a comet: search by name, nickname or catalog number — M31, the Pleiades, Betelgeuse, Halley — and keep up to ten. One at a time takes the planets’ place on the ring, in its own color, with a symbol for its kind. Stars and galaxies are computed on the phone; dwarf planets, asteroids and comets from NASA JPL’s position forecast. Like the planets, they set off no alerts.

EYE, BINOCULARS OR TELESCOPE

Tell the app what you look with, and every visibility follows it: the planets, the stars and their glow, your own objects, the satellite passes (with binoculars at most). Meteors and the aurora are counted by eye.

SATELLITES

The ISS, China's Tiangong, Hubble and more, or your own: search the satellite catalog by name or number and add up to ten. Computed on the phone from their orbital elements, each pass shaded by the cloud along its path and by how bright it is.

NOTIFICATIONS

Visible satellite passes, meteor showers, aurora and eclipses: ahead of time, then live. With Premium Weather, official weather warnings too.

WIDGETS

The ring, the next pass and the compass on the home screen, plus a chart widget for each page.

PREMIUM WEATHER

$0.99 / month · $9.49 / year

The sky, the cloud, the stars and the aurora are free. The subscription adds the weather under that sky:

  • Rain, dew and frost as a line between the Sun's and the Moon's arcs, the rain minute by minute from radar and satellite
  • Haze from the Copernicus aerosol forecast in the star glow
  • Dew or rain and the air temperature at each satellite pass
  • Weather data updated every hour, on the phone and the watch

Monthly or yearly, 7-day free trial, cancel anytime.

ACCURACY

Rise, set, phase and pass times are computed on the device, to about a minute. The cloud and the aurora come from forecasts and can be wrong.

PRIVACY

No account, no ads, no tracking. Fetched: the cloud for a cell of about 5 km, the aurora for a whole degree, the satellites' orbital elements, and with Premium Weather the weather and warnings for a point rounded to about 1 km. Stored only as a coarse grid cell, deleted after 90 days; for warning notifications also your approximate location and a notification ID, until you switch them off. Background location is optional.

Prices are in US dollars; Google Play shows them in your own currency. Not for you? Within 48 hours of a purchase you can request a refund from Google Play. After that, just email us.

The watch face on Google Play

A listing of its own, for watches that install faces from the store.

Krona Moonrise Watch Face

Watch face only. Needs the Krona Moonrise app; on Wear OS 6+ the app adds it.

THIS IS NOT THE KRONA MOONRISE APP

This is only the watch face. It needs the Krona Moonrise app on your phone and watch, which computes the sky. On newer watches (Wear OS 6 and up) the app installs this face by itself. Without the app the face shows only the time, the date, the battery and a note to install the app.

  • Wear OS 6 and newer: install only Krona Moonrise; you do not need this download.
  • Wear OS 5 and older: install Krona Moonrise, then this face.

THE FACE

The next 24 hours of the sky as a ring around the dial: the Sun's arc inside, the Moon's outside, satellite passes, the Moon's phase as a disc, a marker at the current time. 24-hour or 12-hour dial. Four short lines: the next sunrise or sunset, moonrise or moonset, the chosen body's next event and the next visible pass.

Krona Moonrise is free; Premium Weather is a subscription. The face itself collects no data.
